Black Therapists in New York
NYC therapists' wait-lists for Black clients run weeks to months across most boroughs.
30 open positions on the platform right now. Salary band: $72K – $115K (NYC); $60K – $90K (upstate).
New York's Black-led therapy infrastructure is the densest in the country outside Atlanta. NYC has multiple Black-owned group practices, several Black-led behavioral-health nonprofits (Sista Afya is national but has NYC ties), and the CUNY system trains a large share of the city's Black-led LCSWs and LMHCs. Demand outstrips supply consistently — many Black-led practices have 4-8 week wait-lists.

Why New York for Black therapists?
Black population: 3.4 million (17.6% of the state)
New York's Black population is heavily concentrated in NYC (where it's ~22%), with the largest Black populations in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The state is home to several major academic medical centers (NYU Langone, Mount Sinai, Columbia, NewYork-Presbyterian) and the City University of New York system trains a disproportionate share of the country's Black nurses, social workers, and public-health professionals. Harlem Hospital and Kings County Hospital have served Black New Yorkers for over a century and remain critical training grounds. The Black Coalition Against COVID and similar organizations make NYC one of the strongest civic infrastructure cities for Black health professionals.
Mental health is the most-talked-about-and-least-served axis of Black healthcare. Only ~4% of U.S. psychologists and ~7% of mental health counselors are Black, even though Black Americans report depression and anxiety at rates equal to or higher than white peers — and stigma + provider-match concerns mean Black patients disproportionately disengage from care when no Black-affirming therapist is available. Therapy For Black Girls, the Association of Black Psychologists, and the National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network are the primary professional infrastructure. Demand for Black therapists is at an all-time high.
Licensing and practice in New York
New York issues LMHC, LCSW, and LMFT licenses through the State Education Department. Each requires master's-level training, post-graduate supervised hours (varies by license, typically 3,000), and exam passage. NY is in PSYPACT for telehealth-delivered psychology across state lines.
