Black Therapists in Texas

Black Texans report unmet mental-health-care need at nearly twice the state average.

6 open positions on the platform right now. Salary band: $55K – $85K (clinical practice).

Texas has one of the largest unmet-need gaps for Black mental health care of any large state, in part because the state didn't expand Medicaid. Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Austin all have active Black-led private practices, group therapy collectives, and telehealth-first practices serving Black clients statewide. The Texas Mental Health Initiative funds workforce expansion grants that prioritize culturally-responsive providers.

Why Texas for Black therapists?

Black population: 3.9 million (12.9% of the state)

Texas has the second-largest Black population of any state (3.9M, concentrated in Harris, Dallas, Bexar, and Tarrant counties). Houston's Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world, and the state has two HBCU healthcare anchors: Prairie View A&M University's College of Nursing and Texas Southern University. Black maternal mortality in Texas runs roughly 2.5x the state average, and the Texas Department of State Health Services has formally identified Black maternal health as a priority initiative. The healthcare worker shortage across rural and border counties creates real demand for Black clinicians who can build trust in historically under-served communities.

Mental health is the most-talked-about-and-least-served axis of Black healthcare. Only ~4% of U.S. psychologists and ~7% of mental health counselors are Black, even though Black Americans report depression and anxiety at rates equal to or higher than white peers — and stigma + provider-match concerns mean Black patients disproportionately disengage from care when no Black-affirming therapist is available. Therapy For Black Girls, the Association of Black Psychologists, and the National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network are the primary professional infrastructure. Demand for Black therapists is at an all-time high.

Licensing and practice in Texas

Therapy practice in Texas covers several distinct licenses depending on training: LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) is the main masters-level pathway; LCSW (clinical social work) is governed separately; LMFT (marriage and family therapist) is its own track. All require 3,000+ hours of supervised post-degree practice, jurisprudence exam passage, and ongoing CE. Texas accepts PSYPACT for licensed psychologists practicing across state lines.
