Job Description

Overview

Under direct supervision, collects blood samples by performing venipunctures or finger or heel sticks on patients. Checks the quality of blood and assumes responsibility for the safety and comfort of the patient, following established standards and practices. Processes all samples within the department, either manually or using automation equipment, including send-outs.

• Collects venous and capillary blood specimens according to established procedures.
• Logs, tracks, identifies, and labels specimens using computerized systems.
• Performs accurate order entry and verifies requisitions.
• Operates basic laboratory equipment, including centrifuges and microscopes.
• Communicates with laboratory and medical staff to resolve specimen issues.
• Monitors pending work and resolves specimen concerns as needed.
• Sorts and distributes laboratory reports and mail.
• Maintains inventory, orders supplies and rotates stock to prevent expiration.
• Fulfills client supply requests.
• Responds to inquiries regarding test results, specimen status, and general laboratory information.
• Communicates abnormal results to providers as appropriate.
• Assists with training new team members.
• Performs routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
• Completion of an accredited program in phlebotomy is preferred.Certification as a registered phlebotomist by a nationally recognized Phlebotomy Society, such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, is preferred.
• Minimum of two (2) years of work experience as a phlebotomist is preferred. Experience in a healthcare environment is preferred

Schedule: Weekends 4a-8:30a
