Black health in MA
Access to Black healthcare providers in MA — as everywhere — is a matter of life and death. A 2020 PNAS study of Florida hospitals found Black newborns are half as likely to die when cared for by Black physicians, an outcome replicated across multiple clinical settings. The American Economic Review (Alsan et al., 2019) showed Black men randomized to a Black primary care physician accepted 49 percent more preventive services. Racial concordance is one of the most robust, consistently measured interventions in all of healthcare disparities research.
MA patients can use this directory to find verified Black doctors, therapists, doulas, dietitians, nurses, and midwives across the state. Filter by specialty on the specialty pages, or browse by city above. When a listing is thin, try a nearby city, or submit a provider you trust.
Building your Black healthcare team
- Start with a primary care physician or internal medicine doctor — they'll refer you into specialty care as needed.
- For pregnancy, adding a doula to your OB-GYN or midwife team reduces C-section rates by about 39 percent (Cochrane review).
- Mental health care is in critical short supply — book earlier than you think you need to, and consider LCSW/LPC options alongside psychiatry.
- Verify every provider's license via MA's state medical board. Listings on Black Health are provider-claimed or community-submitted; licensure verification is your responsibility as a patient.
