Access to Black healthcare providers in VA — as everywhere — is a matter of life and death. A 2020 PNAS study of Florida hospitals found Black newborns are half as likely to die when cared for by Black physicians, an outcome replicated across multiple clinical settings. The American Economic Review (Alsan et al., 2019) showed Black men randomized to a Black primary care physician accepted 49 percent more preventive services. Racial concordance is one of the most robust, consistently measured interventions in all of healthcare disparities research.
