Black Women's Health

Black women are the most under-researched, over-prescribed, and under-believed patient population in US healthcare. The gap shows up in maternal mortality (Black women die in childbirth at 2.6x the white rate per CDC), endometriosis diagnosis (12-year average delay to diagnosis, longer for Black women specifically), uterine fibroid prevalence (3x higher than white women, with surgical management patterns that have been documented as inequitable), and breast cancer mortality (40% higher despite lower incidence). This hub covers Black women's health as it actually plays out in the data: hormonal, reproductive, gynecologic, cardiometabolic, and the intersections with mental health. We surface the evidence base, the access pathways, and the providers who do this work well.

What this hub covers

Postpartum depression, PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes risk, menopause vasomotor symptoms (SWAN cohort 10.1y median in Black women vs 7.4y overall), breast and cervical cancer screening guidelines for Black women specifically, mental-health intersections including the Superwoman Schema framework.

Care pathways we cover

How to find a Black OB-GYN, when telehealth is appropriate for women's-health concerns vs in-person specialty care, Medicaid coverage for postpartum care extension (12 months in most states post-2024), and where to find a Black doula or midwife in your state. The doula directory and Medicaid doula coverage tracker are the primary access tools.
