APGAR score

Also known as: Apgar score

Medically reviewed, last updated

The APGAR score is a 0-10 assessment of a newborn's condition performed at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth. The name is both an acronym (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration) and a tribute to its developer, Dr. Virginia Apgar. A score of 7 or higher is reassuring; 4-6 is intermediate; 3 or lower indicates need for immediate resuscitation.

The 'Appearance' component (skin color) was developed in a white-default era and is harder to score reliably on Black newborns. Pediatric quality groups have raised concerns about this limitation; some hospitals have shifted to alternative scoring systems for darker-skinned newborns.
