APOL1 testing
Also known as: APOL1 genetic testing
APOL1 testing is a genetic test that identifies variants in the APOL1 gene associated with markedly higher risk of chronic kidney disease, hypertension-related kidney failure, and FSGS-related kidney disease. The high-risk variants are found almost exclusively in people of West African descent (approximately 13% of Black Americans carry two high-risk alleles).
Testing is appropriate for Black patients with unexplained CKD, FSGS, hypertension-related kidney disease, or family history of kidney failure. Results can guide treatment decisions and kidney-transplant planning. See APOL1-mediated kidney disease.
