Doula vs midwife
Also known as: Birth team distinction
A doula provides non-clinical emotional and physical support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. Doulas do not deliver babies or perform clinical procedures. A midwife is a licensed clinician (Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Midwife, or Certified Professional Midwife depending on training) who provides primary maternity care including delivery.
The roles complement each other; many Black mothers work with both a doula and a midwife. The Black doula directory covers doulas; midwife matching is a separate process through your insurance or hospital system.
