eGFR
Also known as: Estimated glomerular filtration rate
eGFR is a calculated estimate of kidney function based on a blood creatinine level, age, and sex. Used to diagnose and stage chronic kidney disease, dose-adjust medications, and qualify patients for kidney transplant.
The eGFR calculation historically used a race coefficient that produced higher eGFR values for Black patients at the same creatinine, which delayed diagnosis of CKD and kidney transplant eligibility. The race-adjusted eGFR was retired by NKF and ASN in 2021. The new equation (eGFR 2021) does not use race. If your prior eGFR results used the old equation, ask for a re-calculation.
