Endometriosis
Also known as: Endo
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other pelvic organs. This tissue bleeds with each menstrual cycle, causing inflammation, scarring, and severe pain.
Black women have historically been underdiagnosed with endometriosis because their pain has too often been dismissed by healthcare providers. Recent research suggests the racial disparity disappears when equal healthcare access is controlled for.
Symptoms include severe pelvic pain, painful intercourse, painful bowel movements, heavy periods, and infertility. If your pain is being dismissed, seek a second opinion from a specialist.
