EPDS (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale)
Also known as: Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale
The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a 10-question self-report screening tool for postpartum depression in birthing parents. It was developed in 1987 and is the most widely used PPD screener globally. A score of 13 or higher is considered positive in most clinical settings; some programs use 10 as the cutoff to capture milder cases.
The EPDS is not a diagnostic instrument; a positive score indicates a need for clinical assessment. Multiple studies (including Doe 2017 in a South Bronx cohort) document elevated EPDS-positive rates among Black mothers. See postpartum depression.
