G6PD Deficiency
Also known as: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
G6PD deficiency is an inherited enzyme disorder affecting red blood cells. When people with G6PD deficiency are exposed to certain triggers (specific medications, infections, or foods), their red blood cells break down faster than the body can replace them, causing hemolytic anemia.
Approximately 13% of Black American men carry the G6PD A- variant. Several common medications can trigger hemolysis, including dapsone, rasburicase, nitrofurantoin, and certain antimalarials.
Critical action: If you have G6PD deficiency, always inform every healthcare provider before taking new medications.
