Hemoglobin A1C
Also known as: HbA1c, A1C, glycated hemoglobin
Hemoglobin A1C is a blood test that measures the percentage of glycated hemoglobin in the blood over the past 2-3 months. It is the standard diagnostic test for type 2 diabetes (A1C ≥ 6.5%) and prediabetes (A1C 5.7-6.4%). Used for both screening and ongoing management.
The A1C-glucose relationship can run slightly higher in Black patients than in white patients at the same average glucose, which is one reason continuous glucose monitoring is now recommended alongside A1C for management decisions. See also CGM.
