HPV vaccine
Also known as: Gardasil
The HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9) protects against the most carcinogenic strains of human papillomavirus that cause cervical, anal, oropharyngeal, vulvar, and penile cancers. CDC recommends routine vaccination at age 11-12, with catch-up through age 26 and shared decision for adults 27-45.
Black HPV-vaccine completion rates are slightly lower than white rates and meaningfully lower than Hispanic rates. For Black patients up to age 45 who haven't completed the series, vaccination is still appropriate. The vaccine is covered with no cost-sharing under the ACA.
