HSA (health savings account)

Also known as: Health savings account

Medically reviewed, last updated

An HSA is a tax-advantaged savings account paired with a high-deductible health plan. You contribute pre-tax dollars (up to $4,150 for individuals or $8,300 for families in 2026); the money grows tax-free; and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. Unused balances roll over year-to-year and the account stays with you across job changes.

HSAs work best for higher-income patients with cash to front before tax savings materialize. For lower-income Black patients on Medicaid or marketplace plans without HSA compatibility, the FSA may be the more accessible vehicle where employer-offered.
