Hyperpigmentation
Also known as: Skin darkening, melasma (one type)
Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of skin caused by excess melanin production. It includes melasma (hormonally driven patches, often on the face), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) following acne, eczema, or injury, and sun-induced dark spots. On skin of color, hyperpigmentation is one of the most common dermatologic concerns and often persists longer than the original inflammatory event.
Treatment typically combines a prescription-strength regimen (tretinoin, hydroquinone, azelaic acid) with rigorous sun protection. Over-the-counter products usually under-perform on Black skin because of pigment depth. See our Apostrophe review for skin-of-color treatment options.
