Lactation consultant (IBCLC)
Also known as: IBCLC, lactation counselor
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a credentialed healthcare professional specializing in breastfeeding and lactation. IBCLCs help with latch, supply, pump use, returning to work, weaning, and breastfeeding-related medical conditions like mastitis or tongue tie.
Black women have the lowest breastfeeding initiation and duration rates of any US racial group, driven by a mix of structural factors (return-to-work timelines, pumping support) and access factors (fewer Black IBCLCs, fewer in-network options under Medicaid). Many telehealth platforms now offer virtual lactation consults covered by the ACA's preventive-services benefit.
