Low-dose CT lung screening
Also known as: LDCT, lung cancer screening
Low-dose CT (LDCT) is an annual chest CT scan used to screen for early lung cancer in current and former smokers. Per USPSTF 2021, screening is recommended for adults aged 50-80 with a 20+ pack-year smoking history who currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years.
The USPSTF criteria have been criticized for under-identifying Black smokers, who tend to develop lung cancer at lower pack-year thresholds than the criteria assume. Some Black-patient-eligible smokers are excluded from screening that would have caught their cancer at a curable stage. Advocacy is ongoing to revise the criteria.
