Lupus anticoagulant
Also known as: LA, antiphospholipid antibody
Lupus anticoagulant is an autoantibody, despite its name, that increases the risk of blood clots. It is one of the antiphospholipid antibodies tested for when evaluating recurrent miscarriage, unexplained blood clots, or stroke in young adults. It can occur with or without systemic lupus.
Black Americans have approximately 2-3x the rate of lupus and lupus-related complications relative to white Americans. Antiphospholipid antibody testing is part of the standard workup for any Black patient with unexplained venous thromboembolism, stroke at young age, or recurrent pregnancy loss.
