Lupus Nephritis

Also known as: LN, lupus kidney disease

Medically reviewed — last updated

Lupus nephritis is a serious complication of lupus (SLE) in which the autoimmune disease causes kidney inflammation. Without treatment, it can progress to permanent kidney failure.

Black lupus patients are three to four times more likely to develop lupus nephritis than white patients, and more likely to develop severe kidney damage, partly due to APOL1 gene variants found in people of African ancestry.

Newer targeted therapies like voclosporin and belimumab have been approved specifically for lupus nephritis. Early and aggressive treatment is key to preserving kidney function.
