Maternal Mortality

Also known as: Maternal death, pregnancy-related death

Medically reviewed — last updated

Maternal mortality refers to the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of the end of pregnancy from causes related to or aggravated by the pregnancy. The U.S. has one of the highest maternal mortality rates among high-income countries.

Black women are approximately three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. This disparity exists across income and education levels, reflecting systemic racism in healthcare. Leading causes include hemorrhage, cardiac conditions, preeclampsia, infection, and embolism.
