Medicaid

Also known as: Medical assistance

Medically reviewed — last updated

Medicaid is a joint federal and state health insurance program for people with limited income and resources. It covers low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with disabilities. Approximately 27% of non-elderly Black Americans are enrolled in Medicaid.

Under the Affordable Care Act, states can expand Medicaid to cover adults up to 138% of the federal poverty level. As of 2024, 40 states plus DC have expanded, but 10 states have not, disproportionately leaving Black adults without coverage in those states.
