Midwife

Also known as: CNM, CM, CPM, certified nurse-midwife

Medically reviewed — last updated

A midwife is a healthcare professional trained to provide care during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period, as well as routine gynecological care. In the United States, types include Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs), Certified Midwives (CMs), and Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) for out-of-hospital births.

Midwife-led care is associated with lower rates of cesarean section, episiotomy, and preterm birth. The National Black Midwives Alliance specifically supports Black midwifery practice and can help you find a Black midwife.
