MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
Also known as: Magnetic resonance imaging
MRI uses powerful magnets and radio waves to produce detailed images of soft tissues without radiation. Used for brain, spine, joint, breast, abdominal, and pelvic imaging. Standard of care for evaluating endometriosis, fibroids, MS, and many neurologic conditions.
For Black women with endometriosis (where diagnostic delay averages 7-12+ years), MRI is increasingly used to image deep-infiltrating disease and rule out other pathology before surgery. Insurance prior-authorization patterns can delay MRI access for Black patients more than white patients on identical clinical indications.
