Myomectomy
Also known as: Fibroid removal surgery
A myomectomy is surgical removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus. Three approaches: hysteroscopic (through the vagina, for submucosal fibroids), laparoscopic (small abdominal incisions), or open abdominal (larger incision, for large or numerous fibroids). Preserves fertility, unlike hysterectomy.
Black women with fibroids who want to preserve fertility or avoid hysterectomy should ask explicitly about myomectomy. Fibroids can recur after myomectomy but the uterus-sparing benefit is substantial. See fibroids.
