Naloxone

Also known as: Narcan

Medically reviewed, last updated

Naloxone is an opioid-overdose reversal medication. Available over the counter (Narcan brand) as a 4 mg nasal spray since 2023. Reverses an active opioid overdose within 2-3 minutes when administered correctly. Has no effect on non-opioid drugs and no abuse potential.

Every household where opioid use is possible should keep naloxone accessible. Black Americans now have higher opioid-overdose mortality rates than white Americans (a reversal from the early 2010s) driven by fentanyl contamination of the drug supply.
