Postpartum psychosis

Also known as: Puerperal psychosis

Medically reviewed, last updated

Postpartum psychosis is a rare (about 1-2 per 1,000 births) but severe psychiatric emergency that typically appears within the first two weeks after delivery. Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, severe mood swings, confusion, and thoughts of harming oneself or the baby. It requires immediate psychiatric hospitalization.

Postpartum psychosis is distinct from postpartum depression and from the 'baby blues.' It is a medical emergency with a real risk of suicide and infanticide if untreated. Call 911 or 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) for immediate help.
