Prostate Cancer

Also known as: PCa, prostate adenocarcinoma

Medically reviewed — last updated

Prostate cancer is cancer that occurs in the prostate gland. It is one of the most common cancers in men, and often grows slowly, but some types are aggressive and spread quickly.

Black men are about 70% more likely to develop prostate cancer than white men and more than twice as likely to die from it. Black men also tend to develop prostate cancer at younger ages and with more aggressive disease.

Screening: If you are a Black man, discuss with your doctor starting PSA screening at age 40–45, rather than the general guideline of 50. Early detection significantly improves outcomes.
