PSA test
Also known as: Prostate-specific antigen test
The PSA test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen in the blood. Elevated PSA can indicate prostate cancer, but can also reflect benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, or recent ejaculation. PSA screening is a shared-decision-making conversation between the patient and clinician; routine universal screening is not recommended.
Black men have approximately 2x the prostate cancer incidence and 2.2x the mortality of white men. Most guideline bodies (AUA, ACS) recommend starting the shared-decision conversation about PSA screening at age 40-45 for Black men, earlier than for the general population. See our prostate cancer condition page.
