RhoGAM

Also known as: Anti-D immunoglobulin, Rh immune globulin

Medically reviewed, last updated

RhoGAM is an injection of Rh-immune globulin given to Rh-negative pregnant women during pregnancy and after delivery to prevent Rh sensitization. Without RhoGAM, an Rh-negative mother carrying an Rh-positive baby can develop antibodies that attack the fetal red blood cells in a subsequent pregnancy (hemolytic disease of the newborn).

The standard schedule is at 28 weeks of pregnancy and within 72 hours after delivery if the baby is Rh-positive. Black women have a lower prevalence of Rh-negative blood (~7-8 percent) than white women (~15 percent), but for those who are Rh-negative, RhoGAM is equally critical.
