Superwoman Schema
Also known as: SWS, strong Black woman schema
The Superwoman Schema is a five-component framework named by Cheryl Woods-Giscombé in 2010 to describe the internalized expectations many Black women carry: (1) obligation to manifest strength, (2) obligation to suppress emotions, (3) resistance to being vulnerable or dependent, (4) determination to succeed despite limited resources, and (5) obligation to help others.
The schema names a help-seeking barrier without pathologizing it. The same patterns that enable survival and achievement can block disclosure of postpartum depression, chronic pain, or mental-health symptoms. The framework is used in culturally adapted therapy for Black women.
