Thiazide diuretic

Also known as: HCTZ, chlorthalidone

Medically reviewed, last updated

Thiazide diuretics (hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, indapamide) are a class of blood-pressure medication that increases urine output and reduces blood volume. The ALLHAT trial showed thiazides equal or better than ACE inhibitors or calcium-channel blockers for hypertension in most adults, with particular efficacy in Black patients.

For Black hypertensive patients, thiazide diuretics are often recommended as a first-line monotherapy choice. See ACE inhibitor for the population-specific efficacy context.
