U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable)
Also known as: Undetectable equals Untransmittable
U=U is the scientific consensus that a person living with HIV who has a sustained undetectable viral load (under 200 copies/mL) cannot sexually transmit HIV to partners. Endorsed by CDC, NIH, and over 1,000 organizations worldwide. The evidence base includes the PARTNER, PARTNER2, and Opposites Attract studies covering 130,000+ acts of condomless sex among serodiscordant couples with zero linked transmissions.
U=U materially changes HIV care: treatment IS prevention. For Black communities navigating both HIV stigma and PrEP access gaps, U=U is the single most important destigmatizing fact about HIV in 2026.
