Ultrasound (medical)

Also known as: Sonogram, US

Medically reviewed, last updated

Ultrasound is a non-radiation imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves. Used for pregnancy monitoring, thyroid evaluation, abdominal imaging, vascular studies, and supplemental breast cancer screening for women with dense breasts.

For Black women with dense breasts (more common in younger Black women), supplemental ultrasound after a mammogram can catch cancers that mammography misses in dense tissue. Ask about dense-breast notification laws in your state and supplemental ultrasound coverage.
