Zuranolone
Also known as: Zurzuvae, brand name Zurzuvae
Zuranolone (brand name Zurzuvae) is the first oral medication approved by the FDA specifically for postpartum depression. Approved in August 2023, zuranolone is taken once daily for 14 days, in contrast to traditional SSRIs which require continuous use for months. It works by modulating GABA-A receptor activity.
The registration trials did not publish race-stratified efficacy results, which leaves an evidence gap for Black mothers who account for a disproportionate share of severe PPD. See our detailed explainer on zuranolone, PPD in Black women, and the race-data gap.
