Black health in Fulton County, Georgia

Fulton County is home to roughly 473,000 Black residents, nearly 44% of the county, and anchors the largest Black professional class in the American South. Atlanta's Auburn Avenue corridor was the commercial and medical centre of Black America for most of the twentieth century; Morehouse School of Medicine still graduates more Black physicians than any other private medical school in the country. Grady Memorial Hospital, the county's level-I trauma centre, handles more than half of all obstetric emergencies for uninsured Black women in metro Atlanta.

The county's Black maternal mortality rate is roughly three times the white rate, a gap the Fulton County Board of Health's Center for Health Equity has been publishing since 2019. Georgia's refusal to adopt Medicaid expansion leaves an estimated 60,000 low-income adults in Fulton without a coverage pathway, disproportionately Black residents in south Fulton.
