Hinds County, ~73% Black, the majority-Black county that contains the state capital Jackson, is the political and clinical anchor of Black Mississippi. The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson is the state's only academic medical centre, its only level-I trauma centre, and its only children's hospital. Jackson State University, the state's largest HBCU, contributes meaningfully to the state's Black nursing and public health workforce.

Mississippi's non-adoption of Medicaid expansion leaves thousands of low-income Hinds County adults in the coverage gap; Jackson's 2022 water crisis added compounding public-health challenges to the county's Black majority.
