Doulas + birthwork
Doula Medicaid coverage: state by state
Which state Medicaid programs reimburse doula services.
Why this matters for Black health
Black women die in childbirth at three to four times the rate of white women. Doulas are one of the most consistently effective interventions, with research showing reduced C-section rates, lower preterm birth, and improved patient experience. Medicaid pays for ~65 percent of births to Black women, so whether Medicaid covers doulas determines whether most Black families can afford that support.
