Why this matters for Black health

All 50 states screen newborns for sickle cell disease, but care infrastructure varies enormously. The states that fund dedicated sickle cell centers, hydroxyurea coverage, transition-to-adult-care programs, and emergency department training measurably improve outcomes. The states that don't leave Black children to navigate a system that routinely undertreats their pain.
