Black patients and Child & Adolescent Therapy
Black child and adolescent therapists. Black youth suicide rates have doubled since 2007, so early, culturally attuned therapy matters most here.
Suicide rates among Black youth ages 10 to 19 have doubled since 2007 (CDC, 2023), yet Black children are less likely than white children to receive mental health services. When they do, they are more likely to be medicated and less likely to receive therapy. Black youth are also more often misdiagnosed with conduct disorder when they present with depression or trauma. Child and adolescent therapists work with clients ages 3 to roughly 21 using play therapy (younger), CBT, family therapy, and trauma-focused modalities.
