Pelvic floor physical therapy is first-line treatment for urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, dyspareunia (painful sex), and postpartum dysfunction, yet Black women are dramatically less likely to be referred than white women. A 2020 Urology study found Black women with incontinence were 40 percent less likely to receive any conservative care referral before being offered surgery. Pelvic floor PT is effective for most of these conditions.
