Pharmacogenomics for Black patients (1)

  • Fluoxetine

    CYP2D6 / CYP2C19

Fluoxetine is metabolized by CYP2D6 and CYP2C19. Ultra-rapid CYP2C19 metabolizers clear fluoxetine too quickly; poor metabolizers of either enzyme accumulate the drug. Because fluoxetine itself inhibits CYP2D6, it also amplifies this interaction for other CYP2D6 substrates.

What this means for Black patients: Sertraline is generally preferred for first-line SSRI therapy when drug-drug interactions are a concern.

Always talk to your pharmacist. This tool is educational and only surfaces interactions we can cite. Pharmacy software checks every combination in your full medication regimen against continually-updated databases like Lexicomp and Micromedex, use this tool to sharpen the questions you bring to that conversation, not to replace it.
