HRSA Bureau of Health Workforce

Award

Up to $40,000 maximum over a 2-year service period. The school is required to provide a match equivalent to the federal funds (see HRSA program guidance for current match structure). The federal portion is taxable; the school may provide additional tax-assistance payments.

Academic Nonprofit Government

Application cycle

FY2026 specific dates not confirmed in accessible sources at retrieval. Historical cycles open in spring/summer with July deadlines. Verify at bhw.hrsa.gov/funding/apply-loan-repayment/faculty-lrp before applying.

PSLF interaction

Most health professions schools are 501(c)(3) nonprofit or government (public university) employers. Faculty appointments typically qualify for PSLF concurrently.

Tax treatment

Taxable. HRSA reports the federal award as income and issues a W-2. School matching funds may have different treatment.

Common pitfalls

  • !Disadvantaged-background requirement is documentation-heavy. A school official must complete a verification form against HRSA criteria.
  • !You must hold a faculty appointment contract for 2 or more years at the time of application.
  • !The 2-year award limit means a lifetime federal cap of $40,000 (lower than NHSC or NURSE Corps).
