NHSC Substance Use Disorder Workforce Loan Repayment Program
Up to $75,000 over 3 years for clinicians treating substance use disorder at NHSC-approved SUD facilities. Lower HPSA bar than the standard NHSC LRP because the qualifying site type is the SUD designation itself, not the geographic shortage score.

Award
Up to $75,000 full-time or $37,500 half-time for 3 years of service at an NHSC-approved SUD treatment facility. Includes a one-time $5,000 Spanish Language Award Enhancement (up to $80,000 total).
Eligible professions
- →Primary care (MD, DO, NP, PA, CNM, RN, pharmacist)
- →Behavioral health (psychiatrist, Health Service Psychologist, LCSW, PNS, MFT, LPC, RN, SUD counselor)
- →MOUD/buprenorphine prescribers (X-waiver no longer required since the 2023 MAT Act)
Eligible employer types
HPSA requirement
Not required. The NHSC-approved SUD facility designation is the qualifying criterion. Award preference goes to facilities providing Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD).
Application cycle
FY2026 deadline: March 31, 2026, 7:30 p.m. ET. Notifications by September 30, 2026.
PSLF interaction
Same as NHSC LRP. Time at a qualifying nonprofit or government employer can count toward PSLF concurrently.
Tax treatment
Federally tax-exempt under IRC §108(f)(4).
Common pitfalls
- !The facility must be NHSC-approved as an SUD treatment facility, which is a separate approval track from NHSC LRP. Verify the site's status before accepting an offer.
- !3-year commitment, longer than the standard NHSC LRP.
