NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program

Repays up to 85 percent of unpaid nursing education debt for RNs, APRNs, and nurse faculty at Critical Shortage Facilities or accredited schools of nursing. Federally tax-exempt. The NURSE Corps is the nursing-track equivalent of NHSC.

Award

Up to 85 percent of unpaid qualifying nursing education debt: 60 percent across a 2-year initial contract (30 percent each year), plus an optional 25 percent in a third year if you are competitive for renewal.

Eligible professions

  • →Registered Nurses (RN, BSN, ADN, MSN, DNP)
  • →Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (NP, CNM, CRNA, CNS)
  • →Nurse Faculty (full-time at an accredited public or private nursing school)

HPSA requirement

Critical Shortage Facility stream: facility must be designated as or located in/serving an HPSA. No HPSA requirement for the Nurse Faculty stream.

Application cycle

FY2026 award notifications by September 30, 2026. Specific FY2026 open and close dates: verify at bhw.hrsa.gov/funding/apply-loan-repayment/nurse-corps or call 1-800-221-9393.

PSLF interaction

Critical Shortage Facility or nurse-faculty employment at a 501(c)(3) or government employer can count toward PSLF concurrently.

Tax treatment

Federally tax-exempt under IRC §108(f)(4).

Common pitfalls

  • !You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident.
  • !Your nursing education must be from an accredited U.S. school.
  • !For-profit private practices and agencies do not qualify as Critical Shortage Facilities.
