HRSA Pediatric Specialty Loan Repayment Program

Up to $100,000 (less federal tax withholding) over 3 years for pediatric medical or surgical subspecialists, or child and adolescent behavioral-health providers, at approved facilities serving underserved populations. Note: taxable, unlike NHSC.

Up to $100,000 (less federal tax withholding) for a 3-year full-time commitment at a PS LRP-approved facility, or during accredited eligible pediatric residency or fellowship training.

HPSA requirement

Facility must be in an HPSA, a Medically Underserved Area (MUA), or serve a Medically Underserved Population (MUP).

Application cycle

PSLF interaction

Time at a qualifying nonprofit or government facility can count toward PSLF concurrently.

Tax treatment

TAXABLE. Awards are paid less the amount withheld for federal taxes. Gross $100,000 is reduced before the participant receives funds. This contrasts with NHSC and NURSE Corps.

Common pitfalls

  • !Award is paid net of federal tax withholding. Real net is materially less than $100,000.
  • !Facility must already be on the PS LRP approved list. Verify before accepting a job.
  • !3-year commitment, longer than NHSC LRP base term.
