DPYD
Dihydropyrimidine Dehydrogenase
What it does
Catabolizes 5-fluorouracil and capecitabine.
Why this matters for Black patients
DPYD deficiency variants cause severe, sometimes fatal toxicity from 5-FU. Variants vary in frequency by ancestry; Y186C is more common in African ancestry than European.
Common variants
| Variant | Phenotype | African | European |
|---|---|---|---|
| Y186C | Decreased function | 0.020 | 0.000 |
