Telehealth

Also known as: Telemedicine, virtual care, online doctor visits

Medically reviewed, last updated

Telehealth is the delivery of clinical care via video, audio, or messaging instead of an in-person visit. It expanded dramatically during COVID-19 and remains a permanent part of primary care, mental health, dermatology, and chronic disease management. Most major insurance plans and Medicaid managed care plans now cover telehealth at parity with in-person visits.

For Black patients in care deserts (rural areas, transportation-limited urban neighborhoods), telehealth can remove access barriers; for patients without reliable broadband or device access it can deepen them. See our reviews of major telehealth services.
