About Dr. Deirdra Barrios, DMFT
You can be the strong one and still be tired. Maybe you’re the person everybody calls when life falls apart—the dependable one, the fixer, the one who somehow always figures it out. But lately, you’re realizing that being able to carry it doesn’t mean you should have to. I’m Dr. Deirdra Barrios, a Black therapist who believes you shouldn’t have to code-switch, over-explain your family, defend your faith, or turn your feelings into therapy-speak just to be understood. I work with women, mothers, individuals, and couples navigating anxiety, trauma, motherhood, relationship challenges, burnout, major life transitions, and the pressure that can come with always being “the strong one.” Therapy with me is real conversation, real reflection, and yes—sometimes real laughter. There’s room for culture here. There’s room for faith if it matters to you. There’s room for the complicated family stuff, the relationship stuff, the motherhood stuff, and the parts of your story you’re still trying to make sense of. You don’t have to perform wellness here. Ready for a space where you don’t have to have it all figured out? Join my therapy waitlist using the booking link on my profile. 🤎

Approach to care
I’m not the therapist who is going to nod for 50 minutes, ask “and how does that make you feel?” and send you back into the world with the same patterns. 😂
My approach is warm, culturally responsive, relational, and direct. I want to understand not just what’s happening, but what’s underneath it—the family patterns, relationships, expectations, survival strategies, cultural experiences, and old stories that may still be running the show.
We’ll laugh when it’s funny, sit with it when it hurts, and tell the truth when something just isn’t working anymore.
I integrate CBT, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, attachment-based work, and systemic approaches, but I don’t believe therapy should feel like a textbook. I’ll help you connect the dots, challenge patterns with compassion, and turn insight into something you can actually use outside of our sessions.
And yes, I’m going to ask questions. Sometimes the kind that make you sit there for a second and say, “Okay… I didn’t think about it like that.” 😂
You don’t have to perform wellness here. You don’t have to code-switch. And you definitely don’t have to come in already knowing how to explain what’s wrong.
Come as you are. We’ll start there.

Black patients and Therapy (LMFT)
Black LMFTs (Marriage & Family Therapists): couples, families, and systemic therapy. Trained to treat the relationship system, not just the individual.
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) are master's-level clinicians trained specifically in systemic therapy, treating the relationship as the "patient," not just the individuals. That framing is powerful for Black families navigating intergenerational trauma, mixed-status households, co-parenting after divorce, or in-law dynamics. Research in Journal of Marital and Family Therapy (2018) found culturally matched LMFTs improved couples-therapy outcomes for Black clients by 30 percent.
